Newzroom Afrika Partners With Regional TV Stations In South Africa
South Africa's Newzroom Afrika partners with two regional television stations, 1KZN TV and Mpuma Kapa TV. In return, the station will receive exclusive programming and regional news services from the channels. MultiChoice supports the idea as it will provide the regional channels with increased audience reach on top of training and mentoring.
MultiChoice has provided 1KZN TV and Mpuma Kapa TV each a grant as support for the initiative, which will enable them to boost their news coverage abilities and construct news bureaus in their respective provinces to support this project. Production equipment such as cameras, lighting, sound, computers, training and technical support will be covered in the grants.
1KZN TV and Mpuma Kapa TV will cover breaking news from remote locations in real-time, participate in interviews via studio-to-studio live feeds, and even package news supplements. The initiative will provide the television channels with much-needed additional funding streams, allowing them to improve their news coverage even more.
Regional TV stations, according to Nyiko Shiburi, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa, are the lifeline for news and stories in their communities. The initiative links up perfectly with MultiChoice's hyperlocal strategy for growing and communicating local stories. He adds that the Group is "dedicated to assisting and allowing the two regional stations to raise the quality of their broadcasting from the grassroots". The collaboration with Newzroom Afrika will elevate local news to a national stage, assisting in bringing local news to a broader audience.
"This new project will continue to represent the ambition of Newzroom Afrika to be Africa's finest, reputable news and information service," said Thabile Ngwato, chief executive officer of Newzroom Afrika. "Supporting regional channels is an important part of our broader strategy, which entails providing world-class offerings at every touchpoint," she said.
