South African Film and Television Awards' Omitted Nominees Announced

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), an agency of the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture and the custodian of the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), has expressed regret on the omission of several nominees from their initial announcement.

The films omitted were the Afrikaans film Griekwastad, The Animation School and Green Leaf Films.

Under the Best Short Films category, Green Leaf Films' Address Unknown will join the existing three nominees, namely Heirloom (Butterfly Films), The Stranger (TH Films) and Uxolile (Zinc Pictures).

Best Student Film category will have The Animation School's Fowl Goblin joining Binding Adventures, Flower in the Subway and The Boy and the Robin that are all The Animation School.

In the Best Achievement in Directing for a Feature Film Griekwastad, a Jozua Malherbe production joins Jenna Bass for Flatland, Sunu Gonera for Riding with Sugar and Louw Venter for Stam. This additional nomination for Griekwastad increases the film nomination total to 7 nominations. It also increases Jozua Malherbe's nominations who got nominated under the Best Achievement in Cinematography for a Feature Film category.

When asked how the error occurred, the NFVF failed to provide a reasonable response. However, the NFVF Spokesperson, Neo Moretlwe, in response to a media enquiry, said that the NFVF, on behalf of the SAFTAs, would like to offer a sincere apology for the SAFTAs nominees that were not captured in the initial announcement. This was an unintentional error that has since been rectified, said Moretlwe.

The Executive Producer of the 15th SAFTAs, Anneke de Ridder, has announced that the show's broadcast will be live on Saturday 22 May at 19h00 on SABC's S3 and Mzansi Magic (DSTV 161). Additionally, an hour will be dedicated to a virtual "red carpet" broadcast, which will start at 18h30.
