#CommunityBroadcastAfrica – Need For Harmonised Regulatory Frameworks For Community Broadcasting
As part of BMA's Industry Programme on "Strengthening Community Radio Broadcasting in Africa" in partnership with 2Gwana Media, we recently conducted a one-day online forum on Thursday, 29 April 2021 ", Understanding Regulatory Framework for Community Radio Broadcasting". The industry forum explored various elements that enable or hinder the growth of the community radio space. The conference brought together various industry stakeholders from across the continent where they shared their experiences, expertise and insight.
The forum looked at how regulatory obligations affect the setting up of community radio stations and looked deep into the role played by industry regulators in fostering sustainable funding for community radio broadcasting. The industry meeting addressed common challenges besetting community radio perspectives ranging from adequate training, policy recognition, funding and revenue generation support, and how to ensure effective governance for community broadcasters in Africa.
Lastly, it was agreed that there are no simple solutions to the challenges expressed. Still, continued discussions and collaboration would help create standardised principles, regulations and solutions to the challenges. The preliminary report on the forum can be accessed here.
