Dates for The 43rd Edition Of The Cairo International Film Festival Announced
The Cairo International Film Festival, which is recognised worldwide as competitive “category A” by the International Federation of Film Producers and the oldest annually running film festival in Africa and the Middle East, has announced its 2021 dates. The festival will run from 1-10 December 2021, with its closing ceremony on 9 December 2021. The last day of the festival will be dedicated to the screening of the prize-winning films.
Despite the challenges brought by COVID19, the international festival has found a way to adapt and survive. According to the festival’s President and Egyptian Film Producer, Mohamed Hefzy, various film festivals and filmmakers have been challenged by the pandemic as it disrupted productions and theatres worldwide. As a result, a majority of festivals were unable to host physical festivals. However, Cairo International Film Festival will be hosting a successful physical edition this year, said Hefzy.
Hefzy went on to say, the festival’s programming and management teams have been striving to present a diverse and rich line up of films and a selection worthy of the festival’s audience. The festival’s objective in the past three years has been to offer high-quality programming to professionals. This has been realised through Cairo Industry Days, including the Cairo Film Connection, which last year provided prizes at the value of US$250 000 to 15 different quality projects.
According to reports, the 42nd edition of the festival featured 95 films from more than 40 countries, including 20 international premieres and 10 new Egyptian films. 30 000 tickets were sold, and 200 foreign guests received by the festival.
