South Africa: Ratings For Most-Watched TV Programmes
The Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa (BRCSA) has released a television audience measurement data report which lists the most-watched television shows on DSTV, SABC1-3 and Etv for February 2021.
According to media reports, the BRCSA data report does not provide total viewership of DSTV commercial channels; however, the figures reflect viewership on the top tier platform. In cases where the same show is broadcasted across multiple channels, only the channel with the highest number of viewers has been included. The data provided shows the top 5 tv shows viewership numbers ranging from 4 million viewers to above 8 million viewers being broadcast on SABC 1, 2 and Etv.
SABC 1's Uzalo had the highest viewership of over 8 million viewers, followed by SABC 1's Generations: The Legacy at 6.5 million viewers. 5.2 million viewers went to Etv Scandal while Skeem Saam on SABC 1 was reported to have 4.9 million viewers. Fifth place went to SABC 2's Muvhango with 4.3 million viewers.
Among the most watched shows on SABC 2 were the nation's national addresses by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The numbers were excluded from the comparison, but to note, the President's Address on COVID19 vaccination reaped close to 2.7 million viewers. Close to 2.4 million viewers viewed the President's address on COVID19 lockdown restrictions, whilst the State of the Nation Address received under 2 million viewers. The monthly viewership numbers of the most-watched shows have declined on each channel, BCRSA reported.
