Netflix Signs With Nigeria's Kunle Afolayan To Produce Sefi Atta's "Swallow"
US streaming platform Netflix has been confirmed to be in a partnership with Nigerian Filmmaker expert Kunle Afolayan. As a result of the collaboration, the audience will access three original feature films that will stream on the Netflix platform. One of which is Sefi Atta's "Swallow".
During an interview with Ben Amadasun, Netflix's Director of Content for Africa, Afolayan confirmed that the three films would explore diverse genres ranging from historical drama, folklore fantasy and character drama. Afoloyan continued to say that principal photography for the first film, a screen adaption of "Swallow" Sefi Atta's 2010 novel, has been concluded.
The novel has an 80s setting which follows the story of Tolani Ajao from Lagos, Nigeria. Afoloyan describes the storyline as following Tolani Ajao's misfortunes, including her exploration into drug trafficking after naiveness led her to take an offer from her roommate Rose Adamson.
Afoloyan is well known to cast non-actors in leading roles. "Swallow" will have singer Niyola (Eniola Akinbo) as Tolani Ajao. Other confirmed cast members include BBNaija reality star Thin Tall Tony, Olusegun Akinremi, Chioma Akpotha, Deyemi Okanlawon, Ijeoma Grace Agu, Omotunde Adebowale, Eniola Badmus, Mercy Aigbe, Kelvin Ikeduba, Joke Muyiwa.
According to reports, the Nigerian American novelist has been reported as having played a significant role and influence on the screenplay adaption of the novel and the film's production.
