South Africa: SABC Renders 12 Radio Station Managers Redundant

Industry news reporting still indicate that the ongoing financial situation within the SABC is still a significant issue that has now led to the 'abrupt' retrenchment of twelve radio station managers.

According to reporting by TV with Thinus, the affected managers and stations are Mamontha Motaung from Lesedi FM, Madikana Matjila who is on Thobela FM, Lawrence Ubisi on Munghana Lonene FM, Rio Mabunda on LigwalagwalaFM, Phumzile Mnci from Umhlobo Wenene, Magdaleen Kruger on RSG, Sibongile Mtyali from Metro FM, Puleng Thulo on Radio 2000, Alvin Pillay from Lotus FM, Jade Mostert on 5FM, Freddy Sadiki who's on Phalaphala FM, lastly the Ukhozi FM's vacant position.

SABC's new organogram has the Radio Marketing Managers reporting directly to Corporate Affairs to ensure that the changes do not affect efficiency and marketing objectives. Moreover, Station Manager titles have been changed to Business Managers.

According to Vuyo Mthembu, SABC Spokesperson, the change in titles will ensure that each station takes complete ownership and accountability of profits and losses and drives revenue and listenership growth whilst maintaining SABC's mandate to provide information education and entertainment to South Africans.

In addressing a media query from TVwithThinus on Monday, the SABC would like to assure the media and its audience that regardless of the new organisational structure which has affected positions, including titles and reporting lines, SABC's operations will remain seamless. The broadcaster's core mandate is at the forefront of all the changes, the commitment to fulfil public service through various radio and television platforms.

The SABC management believes that the structural changes have begun bearing fruitful results, especially when looking at revenue generation.
