BritBox, By BBC Studio And ITV, Enters South African Streaming Market-Place
BritBox (a Netflix look-alike) with the BBC Studios and ITV UK behind it will be entering South Africa streaming market place by the second half of 2021; it has been announced. Coming into South Africa will make it count as the fifth jurisdiction where the service is operating globally, including Australia, Canada, US and of course, the UK. BritBox is said to have just over 1.5 million subscribers.
BritBox, showcasing an extensive back catalogue of content and shows from the British media institutions - BBC and ITV - will be asking, like Netflix, for subscribers to pay a monthly subscription for ad-free access to the platform. Speaking on the South African launch, Martin Goswami, the Group Strategic Partnership and Distribution Director at ITV said: "as South Africa becomes another step in the towards international expansion, we're delighted to be able to establish BritBox as a premium VOD brand across the world."
Also commenting, Paul Dempsey, the BBC Studios president of global distribution said: "We know that South African audiences have a real connection to British television and we can't wait to bring them even more great shows, on-demand, that we know they will love."
While it is confirmed that the service will definitely be launching in South Africa, the pricing strategy and the content catalogue plans for the South African space, are still very patchy, and yet to be confirmed by the promoters of the platform.
