ViacomCBS Networks Africa Cancels 2021 MTV Africa Music Awards, No Reason Given
According to report attributed to the show's organisers, the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) for 2021 due to take place on the 20th February in Kampala, Uganda has been cancelled by ViacomCBS Network Africa.
Reports have it that ViacomCBS Network Africa made the cancellation announcement last Thursday. The show was being organised in cahoots with the Ugandan tourism ministry, with the Multichoice DStv allocated the broadcasting rights.
While some industry watchers say the cancellation could be due to operational complications surrounding staging such a show at the same time as a ravaging Covid-19 pandemic, many in the know, however, take the view that ViacomCBS Network Africa has had to pull the show following the current political turmoil in Uganda with allegations of human rights violations and cases on citizens being shut off the internet.
The view that the show was pulled from Uganda due to as a result of political consideration is lent credence from the past similar pan-African show such as CNN Multichoice Africa Journalist Awards which also rotates with the continent, but which has always avoided countries perceived to be in negative where media freedoms and the protection of human rights are concerned.
