TV Programming: 'Skeem Saam' - SABC1 Hit Soapie - Unsure Of Renewal

According to industry sources, Skeem Saam, a long-running, locally produced soapie offered by the South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) might be thrown in jeopardy as its renewal status is yet to be confirmed by SABC1.

Although the SABC says the show is not cancelled - it is also not yet renewed and could soon be wound down. The SABC did confirm that it will continue to broadcast the episodes filmed, which should take the airing of the soap on SABC till June.

Reports say that Skeem Saam has about one-month production left, and if SABC does not settle the programme renewal issue promptly, the show's cast and crew may start considering their options and perhaps head to greener pastures.

Audience viewing figures seen by BMA suggests that Skeem Saam took in more than 4.4 million viewers in December 2021 and is ranked as the third "most-watched" show on the SABC1 channel and the fourth-ranking show on all terrestrial platform, following on Uzalo (SABC1), Scandal (e.tv) and Generations (SABC1).

The SABC message does want it to remain clear the it "refutes allegations that Skeem Saam is cancelled. According to the broadcaster spokesperson, Mmoni Seapolelo, "Skeem Saam remains a successful pillar of SABC1's schedule and is the 3rd most-watched programme in South Africa. The SABC has duly fulfilled its contractual obligations in relation to Skeem Saam's production for the current season which is scheduled until June 2021".
