The Oscars 2021: Several African Content "Eligible" For The Academy's International Feature Awards Category
According to industry reports, several African movies have been deemed "Eligible for Consideration" for Oscars 2021 International Feature Film category. One of these, according to Pulse Nigeria is "The Milkmaid". It comes along with "Not A Burial, It's a Resurrection" (the first-time submission from Lesotho) and "Night of the Kings" (from Ivory Coast) and a host of others.
The Oscars International Feature Film category awards and recognises foreign films produced outside of the United States of America with exclusive or predominantly non-English dialogue or scripting.
It will be recalled that Nigeria's Genevieve Nnaji's movie "Lionheart" was disqualified in 2019 for not meeting the language requirement. This subsequently created some disquiet with critics that said the disqualification was not merited.
As a result, the Academy has said that, for the first time, it will be restructuring its voting mechanism to make them a lot fairer and inclusive.
