Netflix Appoints Strive Masiyiwa As Board Member To Push Growth In Africa
Mr Strive Masiyiwa, the Zimbabwean telecoms billionaire, has been appointed to join the board of Netflix Inc., the streaming platform giant has just announced - making a point of note that Mr Masiyiwa is its first African director.
Industry watchers and analysts believe that the appointment of Mr Masiyiwa to the Netflix board is with the strategic aim to boost its African market growth further. Masiyiwa, one of the richest people in Africa, is the founder and executive chairman of Econet Global, a sprawling telecommunications, media and technology services organisation with operations in Africa, Europe, Asia and also in South America.
Netflix, currently the global market leader of over-the-top (OTT) streaming services with over 190 million subscribers, believes that Masiyiwa will bring "a fresh set of connections and experience to bear for the organisation. He will join the two other European directors as the only non-US board members of the streaming giant.
Mr Reed Hastins, Chairman and Co-CEO of Netflix Inc., commenting on the appointment said: "We are delighted to welcome Strive to the Netflix board. His entrepreneurship and vision in building businesses across Africa and beyond will bring valuable insights and experience to our board as we work to improve and serve more members all around the world."
