South Africa: Filming For International Productions To Ramp Up As Country Re-Opens
South Africa has been relatively successful as a destination to locate and shoot international films and television programmes. The country is endowed with a good range of location, skilled labour-force that speaks English, and smart government incentive programmes such as cash rebates for foreign production.
According to the Variety.com, recent international films that have been shot in South Africa included "Good Omens" by Amazon Studios, "Bloodshot" and "Monster Hunter" from Sony Pictures.
Now, all these were about to be in jeopardy when the Covid-19 tsunami hits, and international film and TV production came to a halt - making things difficult for industry stakeholders, and imposing enormous cost burden on the country.
The sunny uplands seem to be arriving back to the industry, as following the easing of travel restrictions by the South African government, international film and TV production services are commencing again. And they are set to surge as the country's summer season get seriously underway.
According to Marisa Sonemann-Turner, head of production at Film Afrika, "the industry is looking forward to a jam-packed first half of 2021."
