Why OTT Deployment By Broadcasters Is Not Just A Tick Box Exercise - Stephen Watson, Discover Digital
As broadcasters across Africa have begun to establish their digital landscape, many are looking at the cost and benefits of OTT streaming services and asking themselves if or how OTT can be part of their digital life.
According to Stephen Watson, CEO, Discover Digital, broadcasters should not only actively implement OTT services, but they also should, more importantly, see OTT deployment as more than just a box-ticking exercise. It should be considered with full strategic awareness and intent. Watson gave this advice during a presentation at last week's industry forum on "Reshaping Africa's Broadcasting Industry - Strategies For Acceleration. Broadcast Media Africa presented the industry forum in collaboration with Intelsat.
According to the Discover Digital chief, having access to OTT digital technology is not enough. If "as a broadcaster, you simply think you're going to plug-in technology and add your content and are going to have a winning formula, then you might need to think again." said Watson.
"You really got to think about the strategy, and this starts with knowing why you are doing OTT. It is also essential to understand who your OTT service is for. And more importantly, you will need to allow enough time for your OTT operations grow and evolve." Watson advises.
