South Africa: Govt. Says New Spectrum Release Will Usher In Certainty
Further to the announcement from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) that it had approved the go-ahead for spectrum licensing, the Minister for Communications and Digital Technology in South Africa, Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams declares that the announcement will bring the desired certainty to the industry.
The Minister said: "The release of the spectrum is also critically important in supporting efforts aimed at bridging the digital divide and connect the unconnected, and though these processes had a slight delay we are confident that the announcement will bring much-needed certainty to the industry."
ICASA much-awaited spectrum auction is expected to provide additional incentive for investment into new broadband infrastructure and therefore stimulate economic growth.
ICASA chairman commenting along the lines said that "The key considerations for the licences include "the imposition of empowerment obligations on the WOAN to ensure it is a credible empowerment tool that will assist ICASA to achieve the sector's transformation agenda."
