Showmax Delighted As Big Brother Naija Draws Record Streaming Views Across Africa
Executives at Multichoice Showmax may have been doing internal cartwheel jumps to celebrate the viewing figures from the 5th edition of Big Brother Naija, which, despite being currently flighted in a pandemic has become a hit with streamers in Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and other parts of the continent.
The Big Brother Naija show, which started broadcasting July 19 on a DStv and GOtv pop-up channels and set to finale on September 27, appears to have more viewers electing to watch via the Showmax streaming platform.
People at Showmax says that the show seems to have "broken the record for the most-watched live-streamed entertainment show" on its platform. They said that a large proportion of streamers are outside Nigeria. According to Showmax "Nigeria accounts for almost 50 per cent of the viewing hours, South African 30 per cent and 15 per cent from Kenya. Ghana, Botswana, Namibia and Uganda also see unusual viewing traffic for Big Brother Naija."
The streaming platform still expects that more of its viewing record will be scaled as the programme comes to a season's finale, and industry watchers are betting that given the "unexpectedly renewed interest, the chances are that the 6th edition commissioning papers are already being signed."
