Kenya: Michael Joseph Announced As Board Chairman Of Safaricom
Michael Joseph, the former Chief Executive of Safaricom (Kenya’s largest telco), has been appointed as the new board chairman after the departure of the current Nicholas Nganga - who had served for thirteen years and had overseen the company grew to become a local behemoth.
Mr Joseph initially served Safaricom as its CEO up till 2010 - before yielding to Mr Bob Collymore. He returned as the acting CEO following the sad passing of Mr Collymore.
Of his appointment to the new role, Mr Michael said: “It is an honour to serve as the next Chairman of a company that I am passionate about and have been involved with ever since its inception. “As I take up the new role, I am optimistic of the great opportunities ahead to work with the Board, Peter and the entire Safaricom team to continue to transform lives,” Mr Michael added.
At its virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM) Safaricom announces a payout of Kshs 56Billion (520 Million US Dollars) to shareholders and almost Kshs 20 Billion (187 Million US Dollars) to the government.
