NIGERIA: MTN Re-Negotiates With Tower Providers, Hopes Rural Connectivity Drive Will Boost Growth
The leadership of MTN Nigeria says they have agreed with IHS and INT Towers Limited to expand current provisions regarding currency conversions providing clarity to both parties on foreign exchange situation with Naira payments".
It should be recalled that several years ago, MTN Nigeria offloaded its "passive infrastructure" - including towers, and replaced it with service agreements with tower companies. MTN explained then that this would enable it to focus energy on its core competency,
MTN is now looking towards boosting earnings from rural connectivity and backhaul fibre deployment. Ferdi Moolman, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, commented that he is excited about his company's expansion of its fibre connectivity infrastructure to deliver accelerated rural telephony. "The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the huge importance of digital infrastructure. We are delighted to enhance our fibre networks and rapidly connecting those Nigerians in rural areas that are currently unable to access telecommunications services."
