OTT TV: Starz Play's expansion plan across Africa

Starz Play, a VOD and OTT TV provider in the Middle East and North Africa, is planning to offer its services to the rest of sub-Saharan Africa.

A high-profile industry source, quoting the CEO of Starz Play Arabia - Maaz Sheik, suggested that the big market move is being for 2017. With this step, Starz Play will be entering the rapidly crowding Africa's SVOD and OTT TV market. This following in the heels of other big name entrance into this market - notably Netflix.

According to the statement from Maaz Sheik, Statz Play will initially play the South African market and before looking to enter other 'selected' countries and markets within the English speaking regions of the continent.

Having launched in Arabia since 2015 with some qualified success, Starz Play may offer a range of Western movies and series, including Starz Originals and content from studios like Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, Sony, Universal and CBS.

It is unclear, as at this time, whether the company has any plan or strategy to offer local African content.
