Realness Africa’s Screenwriters Residency 2020 Commences Virtually

Realness Institute - the organisation that helps nurture the development of new generation of filmmaking talents in Africa says it will commence its fifth screenwriters residency from today (July 01) up until September 01 2020.
Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, this year’s Residency is virtual, with candidates coming from places such as Morocco, Sudan, Ethiopia and South Africa.
Talking about the induced format change, Asanda Biyana, programme manager for the Realness Institute, said “Although we are disappointed to not be returning to our creative home in South Africa due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it did not seem like an option to postpone the Residency…we wanted to surge ahead and use this difficult time to cultivate new talents and stories.
After the Residency is completed, participants will showcase their work during the Durban Film Mart, which will take place virtually from the 4th - 13th September 2020.
According to the co-founder of the Realness Screenwriter Residency programme, previous participants have seen their work screened at TIFF, IFFR, Berlinale, Venice and Sundance. Also, the Realness Institute has provided support for more than 30 feature film project from all across Africa.
