MALAWI: Court Overturns Regulator Ban On Radio Stations Phone-In Programmes
Malawi's Constitutional Court has ruled that the ban imposed on all phone-in programmes run by all private radio stations in the country was illegal.
The ban was imposed by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) in the run-up to the 2019 general elections in Malawi. However, Judge Chifundo Kachale of the Constitutional Court said in his ruling that not only was the ban illegal and irregular, but MACRA also did not have any power to impose such ban.
Media organisations and platforms in the country have hailed the ruling as a victory for freedom of the press and are grateful to the judiciary for defending this fundamental right.
Commenting on the court's decision, Mr Gospel Kazako, - managing director of Zodiak (a media group) - said it is delightful to see the court have put its weight behind freedom of expression in society.
