Angola Awards Telco Licence No.4 To Africell - Reports

According to a recent industry report, Africell - Lebanese telco group - has received a mobile telecommunication services provider licence from the authorities in Angola.

The Angolan mobile telecommunications market, with an estimated subscriber number of just under 15 million, is currently shared between Movitel and Unitel. The state-owned Angola Telecoms mainly focuses on offering fixed and internet communications services.

The entry of Africell is expected to shake up the competition in Angola, just as it has done in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Gambia and Sierra Leone - where it also runs operations.

Africell's award, which is reported to have been granted on 19th March 2020 was obtained after a 'rigorous bidding' exercise that supposedly involved the local firm Telstar as well as the pan-African behemoth, MTN.
