Zambia: Free Press Initiative Calls For Govt To Re-Open Prime TV
Free Press Initiative (FPI) Zambia says that it is hopeful that Dora Siliya, Zambia’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, will soon respond favourably to Prime Television’s recent appeal against the cancellation of its broadcasting license.
In a statement released on Monday, the FPI’s Founder and Coordinator Joan Chirwa, said that she is confident that Siliya, being a fully trained journalist herself, would make an objective decision on the matter.
Chirwa added that she was shocked that the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) had cancelled Prime TV’s broadcasting license without having followed the due process as provided for by Zambia’s laws.
However, Chirwa expressed that she is optimistic that the Ministry of Information would provide a favourable response to the appeal.
She said that the FPI would follow the appeal process closely and ensure that the law is respected and also that fairness is employed at this stage.
Chirwa said that she regretted that the media in Zambia currently faced a lot of problems in the execution of its duties and urged the Zambian government to allow the press to operate freely.
