Zambia: ZNBC Employees Not Paid Since February - Reports
The Zambia Union of Broadcasters and Other Information Disseminators (ZUBID), has revealed that ZNBC has not paid its employees since February.
The union, last week Wednesday, reportedly gave a 24 hours’ ultimatum to the Zambia National Broadcasting Cooperation (ZNBC), to pay its workers their March 2020 salaries, failure to which they will down tools.
ZNBC allegedly failed to meet the deadline, and employee salaries for March remain unpaid.
According to an internal memo that was addressed to ZNBC workers signed by Masaiti Katebe and obtained by the Zambia Watchdog, management has said that they failed to pay the March salaries due to insufficient funds to meet their wage bill.
ZUBID stated that ZNBC Management had continued subjecting the workers to delayed salaries despite the dedication of its employees to keep citizens informed in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The union is also concerned about whether the workers will receive their April 2020 salaries under the rule of the new Director-General Malolela Lusambo.
ZUBID has now urged the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services, to help resolve the severe financial challenges at ZNBC, adding that all efforts to engage the national broadcaster’s management on the matter, had failed.
It is not yet clear if the employees will indeed down tools as a result of unpaid salaries.
