COVID-19 In Africa: Kenya Broadcasting Corporation Rolls Out Educational School Radio Broadcasts
Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) through its various radio stations began airing school broadcasts on Monday this week.
In an agreement that was signed between the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and KBC, the school programs will broadcast from Monday to Friday on a weekly basis.
Kenya’s Ministry of Education and the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation have stepped up measures to support learning during the time that learners will be at home.
The move follows the government’s indefinite shutdown of schools due to the global coronavirus pandemic.
KICD will broadcast educational radio programmes daily on Radio Taifa, KBC English Service and Iftiin FM.
Radio Taifa will broadcast Swahili content between 10 am and 11 am.
English service will broadcast the school programmes from 9:15 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm on weekdays.
Iftiin FM, which airs on the 89.9 frequency in Garissa, will broadcast the educational content from 9:15 am to 1 pm and again from 2 pm to 5 pm daily.
The changes are aimed at making sure that the over 10 million learners that are now at home are not left behind as many institutions adopt e-learning to make up for the time that learners will be at home.
