Nigeria’s NBC Kicks Off Broadcast Industry Reform Implementation — Reports

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has announced that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has kicked off the implementation of the broadcast industry reforms.

The implementation of the reforms, which are aimed at further strengthening the NBC’s regulatory role was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Minister made the announcement in Lagos last week Friday at a meeting with the Filmic Group, a platform exclusively for creative industry practitioners, comprising of movie producers, content producers and directors, among others.

Alhaji Mohammed said that the process for the amendment of the NBC Act had begun and that an Executive Bill would be sent to the National Assembly for legislative action.

In his remarks, a prolific movie producer and one of the leaders of the Filmic Group, Mr Mahmoud Alli-Balogun, thanked the Minister for implementing policies aimed at improving the creative industry and unlocking its potential for employment generation and wealth creation.

The NBC Reforms Implementation Committee handed its report over to the Minister on November 19, 2019, with recommendations aimed at reinforcing the regulatory role of the Commission and unlocking the creative talents of Nigerians by ending monopoly and anti-competition in the broadcast industry.
