MultiChoice Lets Go Of Over 1000 Employees In Restructuring Process
More than 1 000 MultiChoice employees have lost their jobs after the African pay-TV operator kicked off its latest round of mass retrenchment in June last year.
In June 2019 MultiChoice announced that it planned to let go of thousands of employees in its call centre department and walk-in centres as part of a massive restructuring of its customer service delivery model.
At the time of that announcement, MultiChoice had explained that DStv subscribers had been making less and less use of the MultiChoice call centres and were also emailing them less. MultiChoice's walk-in customer service centres had also seen a gradual decrease in customer visits.
MultiChoice said that the restructuring process would affect up to 2 194 staffers.
The Information Communication and Technology Union (ICTU) trade union at the time announced that the union would fight MultiChoice's plan to retrench workers and that the union had not been consulted.
MultiChoice has confirmed that the pay-TV operator has shed just over 1 000 workers who accepted voluntary severance packages.
Over 1 000 other workers decided to accept various positions within the company's structure.
