Apple Music Rolls Out Africa Now Playlist
Apple Music has launched a new playlist that showcases African artists.
The Africa Now playlist boasts songs from Africa’s most celebrated musicians and offers the latest releases from genres such as gqom, hip hop, amapiano, Afrobeats, Afropop, kuduro and alté among others.
The playlist will be updated on a weekly basis to track new music as soon as it is released.
Apple Music says that the Pan-Africanist ideal never died. It has morphed into sonic fragments which now connect Johannesburg to Nairobi via Accra and Lagos.
Africa Now rolled out its playlist with the ‘African Giant’ Burna Boy as the featured artist on the cover and showcased his latest single ‘Money Play’ right at the top.
Burna Boy said that Apple Music is a massive support system for ensuring that African music reaches as many people as possible all across the globe. He added that as a former Apple Music Up Next artist, he still feels the impact of that honour today.
Other artists that are featured on the playlist include Sho Madjozi (South Africa), Davido (Nigeria), Sarkodie (Ghana), Tiwa Savage (Nigeria), Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania) as well as DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small (South Africa), among a host of others.
The new feature comes as an early start to the year by the music streaming service and follows a number of improvements that were made on the playlist side of things by music streaming platforms in 2019.
