Creator Of New Nigerian Animated Movie Advocates For Diversity In Nollywood
Nigeria’s new animated movie – Malika Warrior Queen - made its big-screen debut recently at the 8th annual Lagos Comic-Con.
Set in a backdrop of fifteenth-century West Africa, the short film tells the tale of a queen and military commander, Malika, who is struggling to keep the peace in her rapidly expanding empire.
Growing up as a prodigy, Malika had inherited the crown from her father in highly unusual circumstances.
Top Nollywood stars such as Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Femi Branch and Blossom Chukwujekwu amongst others lend their voices to the movie.
The Malika series began as comic books back in 2016, and writer/producer Roy Okupe was then inspired to take the book to the screens, after noticing its growing popularity.
Okupe is hoping that the launch of Malika will encourage Nigeria’s Nollywood to invest in local animators and make animated movies.
He said that he sees no reason why animation cannot be the new frontier for Nollywood.
Okupe added that he stands for diversity in Nollywood and plans to collaborate with local animators on his future projects.
