Ethiopia Launches Its First Dedicated TV Platform, Ethiosat

Ethiosat – the first-ever dedicated Ethiopian TV platform has been rolled out in Ethiopia to host the nation’s most popular local channels. This has been made possible by deals made between the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), the Association of Ethiopian Broadcasters (AEB) and the leading satellite operator, SES.

Ethiosat is hosted on SES’s NSS-12 satellite and delivers over 30 channels exclusively for Ethiopian audiences, with 12 of those channels in High Definition (HD).

Amman Fissehazion, the Chairman of the AEB, said that up until now, Ethiopia’s content had mainly been broadcast from an orbital location that also delivers content to Middle Eastern and North Africa, which explains the confusing mix of content that the Ethiopians used to receive.
He said that by migrating Ethiopia’s TV channels to a new location on SES’s satellite, AEB had created an Ethiopian-only TV experience that also delivers channels in HD, a first for Ethiopia.

To access Ethiosat’s direct-to-home (DTH) offering, Ethiopian TV audiences must have their local satellite antenna installer change the current position of their antenna. This will allow them to receive the signal and content from SES’s NSS-12 satellite.

The CEO of SES Video. Ferdinand Kayser said that SES is supporting this launch and providing on-the-ground services to make sure that Ethiosat is successful. He added that SES is training local installers to correctly reposition the satellite dishes of each TV household to facilitate a seamless migration.
