Broadcast Regulation

Nigeria’s NBC Threatens To Sanction Broadcasters That Violate Codes

Nigeria’s National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has announced that it will prosecute broadcast stations that air content that contravenes the nation’s broadcasting code.
Alhaji Ikra Bilbis, the Chairman, and Modibbo Kawu, the Director-General of the NBC, stated this in separate speeches delivered during the NBC’s 5th annual lecture series in Abuja, Nigeria.
Kawu said that the duty of regulating broadcasting is currently more challenging than ever before, as the number of new stations being licensed increases by the day. He added that the NBC now has to keep up with the growing number of new broadcasters, amongst whom are those who regularly broadcast content that leaves much to be desired in terms of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
In his presentation, Bilbis announced that there are a number of initiatives that the Commission is looking into in order to bring broadcasting in Nigeria in line with the rest of the world.
The Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed said that he is committed to taking the broadcasting and information sector to the next level of prosperity.
He noted that he would work together with the broadcast media to make sure that social media content only reflects a sense of patriotism for peace and unity in Nigeria.
