South Africa: Vodacom Launches VodaPay Masterpass
Vodacom has rolled out its VodaPay Masterpass mobile app in South Africa, which utilises Mastercard’s global digital payment service to make tokenised bank card payments.
The app has been made available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store and was developed by the same company that created the Masterpass applications for SA banks.
According to store listings, the VodaPay Masterpass app was published on 26 June 2019 but is yet to be downloaded by a significant number of users.
To start using the app, consumers must first verify their cellphone number and then add their bank card as the method of payment by either adding their details manually or by scanning the card.
The Masterpass environment manages in-store, online and mobile purchases, and also supports many different payment methods.
The app also enables the purchase of data, airtime and other mobile products by allowing users to buy data and airtime using their bank card.
Vodacom told MyBroadband that the VodaPay Masterpass app is on schedule to commercially launch in August 2019.
The mobile operator said that the standalone digital wallet that is currently in pilot phase would conveniently give customers the ability to make third-party payments such as utilities, DSTV; and also pay traffic fines in addition to purchasing data bundles and airtime.
Vodacom added that while the app has not been launched commercially yet, it can still be downloaded from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
