South Africa’s Government To Save SABC From Communication Blackout
It has been reported that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) will be saved from an imminent communication blackout by the South African Government.
Speaking at the sidelines of country’s state of the nation address on Thursday (20 June), the Communications Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams said that her department was in the process of finalising an application process with Treasury.
Ndabeni-Abrahams said South Africans should rest assured because as soon as the Treasury finalised their processes, the SABC would continue operating as usual. She promised that there would be no communication blackout.
The SABC is currently facing massive financial issues with the broadcaster having to choose between paying municipal bills and paying staff at the end of March this year.
In a conversation with the Sunday Times, SABC’s Board Chair, Bongumusa Makhathini had said that he wasn’t sure if the broadcaster would be able to pay for salaries come the end of June.
