Nigeria’s NBC Issues A New List Of Non-Negotiable Working Conditions For GOtv
Nigeria’s National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a new list of conditions for GOtv to continue operating in the country.
The NBC Director-General, Is’haq Modibbo Kawu addressed a press conference recently and confirmed that the Digital Terrestrial Licence that had been issued to Details Nigeria Limited is scheduled to expire soon and that a notice had been issued in January last year.
However, Kawu noted that contrary to what the media had previously reported, the NBC had no intentions to shut down GOtv.
He said that the NBC had decided not to GOtv’s licence because the current setup of Nigerian Broadcasting in a digital era separates the roles of signal distributors from that of the content provider. According to the government, this is White Paper on the transition from analogue broadcasting to digital broadcasting.
The NBC Director-General said that at the latest meeting that the commission held with GOtv it was decided that GOTV would have its licence renewed for three years, but with certain provisions.
The separation of the Signal Distributor from the Content Provider would be non-negotiable. That means that going forward, GOTV is no longer allowed to combine the two functions.
NBC also issued a warning to broadcast media organisations in Nigeria on the way that they cover the elections, stating that anyone that violates the regulations would face strict sanctions.
