Ghana To host The 8th DStv Eutelsat Star Awards
Ghana is preparing to host the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards for the second time since the award’s inception in 2011.
Ghana was also the first country to produce a poster winner during the first edition of the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards. To date, three overall winners have been Ghanaian contestants namely; Michael Yeboah (2011 winner), Lloyd Ossei Baffour (2013) and Ayawen Asuinura who was the winner in 2015.
Government dignitaries, students, the academic community and the scientific world, will come together when Eutelsat and their partner, MultiChoice Africa host the 8th edition of the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards in Accra, Ghana on the 13th February 2019.
The astronaut Paolo Nespoli will lead the judging of the continental awards with the assistance of a panel of industry experts namely; Dr Angela Lamptey, Department of Marine and Fisheries Sciences Lecturer: University of Ghana, Dr Khamisi Kalegele, Director of Knowledge Management: Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology COSTECH.
Astrid Bonté, Director of International Affairs: Eutelsat, Ernestina Appiah, Founder & CEO of Ghana Code Club, Cheryl Uys-Allie, Director: MultiChoice Talent Factory as well as Cecil Sunkwa-Mills, the General Manager of MultiChoice Ghana will also be part of the panel.
Through the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards, Eutelsat and MultiChoice Africa hope to ignite innovative thinking amongst secondary school students; to raise awareness of how science and technology is a crucial part of daily life, and to show the various ways that satellites contribute to development in Africa.
In 2017, the competition received a Better Satellite Award at the third annual Better Satellite World Awards event in London. The awards give recognition to established businesses along with great innovators who make the world a healthier, prosperous, better-educated and inclusive place for humankind.
The winning entries to the DStv Eutelsat Star awards will be awarded the following prizes:
• Essay Award - A trip for the winner and their parent to Eutelsat in France and tickets to the launch of a rocket in French Guiana.
• Poster Award - A trip for the winner and their parent to the MultiChoice head offices and a visit to the South African Space Agency at Hartbeesthoek.
The schools attended by the award winners will receive a DStv installation, including a television, dish, free access to the DStv Education Package and a DStvExplora.
