BBC iPlayer And BBC Earth Add Dynasties To Line-Up
The BBC has announced that its latest natural history series, Dynasties will be shown on BBC iPlayer and BBC Earth in Ultra HD and HDR.
The series will kick off on Sunday 11 November on BBC One, with its debut episode, Chimpanzee. It will then be made available for viewing in 4K HDR soon afterwards. BBC Studios in Africa, on the other hand, has also announced that its much-anticipated landmark series, David Attenborough’s Dynasties, will be showing exclusively on BBC Earth from November 18th.
All six episodes of the series will be played on BBC Earth (channel 184) and will also be available for DStv Premium customers to download or stream from Catch Up on DStv Now and also from Catch Up Plus which is available on a DStv Explora that is connected to the Internet.
BBC’s Chief of Technology and Product Officer, Matthew Postgate said that Dynasties is precisely the type of landmark BBC show that the viewers want to see in ultra HD.
Postgate added that BBC had been trialling HD for the past few years and it had become clear that the audience enjoys the improved quality.
Dynasties will be joined by the likes of ‘Like Planet Earth II’ and ‘Blue Planet II’ also narrated by Sir David Attenborough as part of the Beeb’s Ultra HD trials.
The BBC also showed matches in the Wimbledon Championships and FIFA World Cup in 4K earlier this year, utilising the Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG)format for its HDR presentation. The two broadcasts came with the extra challenge of being live airings, whereas Dynasties is a pre-recorded programme so has had the benefit of being encoded in Ultra HD prior to release and therefore should face fewer streaming issues.
Dynasties will zoom in on five different animal species. Lions, emperor penguins, hunting dogs and tigers will get their own episodes.
