Films From Six African Countries Submitted For Oscar Consideration
More and more African countries have been submitting their entries in the Academy Awards foreign language category lately, and this year Malawi and Niger became first-time entrants in the film race that has received 87 approved submissions for the Oscars this time.
The number of submissions has, however, decreased from last year’s 92 bids.
Malawi submitted Shemu Joyah's The Road to Sunrise, and Niger offered Rahmatou Keita's The Wedding Ring. These submissions are among 87 other submissions sent in by countries gunning to win in the 91st Academy Awards’ foreign-language category.
Nigeria did not enter this time, but 6 African countries represent the continent on this year's approved foreign language race list.
Nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday 22 January 2019 and the 91st Oscars ceremony that will be taking place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on Sunday 4 February 2019.
