Seventy-Two Percent Of South Africans Will Choose Netflix
A recent survey conducted by MyBroadband revealed that 72% of the participants would choose Netflix over other competing products, including Showmax, DStv, and Amazon Prime.
Netflix is available in South Africa from R99 per month. Netflix Premium, the most expensive option is R169 per month.
The streaming service does not use up a lot of data, and Netflix states that users can watch Full HD streams with just a 5Mbps Internet connection
MultiChoice stated that it estimates that Netflix has grown to between 300,000 and 400,000 subscribers in South Africa. Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice CEO said that these numbers show significant growth for Netflix in just two and a half years.
Figures for 2018 reflect that Netflix currently has 57.4 million subscribers in the US, and 72.8 million in other countries combined.
It is important to mention that subscribers can share their accounts, and while one person may pay for a Netflix subscription, they can still let friends and family share the service. This can cause confusion when “subscriber” figures get mistaken for “viewer” figures.
In addition to Netflix’s subscriber numbers rising in recent years, its original content lineup and the volume of shows being watched have increased as well.
Netflix declined to provide feedback on its South African subscriber numbers and told MyBroadband that it does not release such information to the public.
