Naspers Chooses Industry Veteran, Niclas Ekdahl, To Head New Streaming Video Unit
In a fight-back bid against Netflix's encroachment into its business in Africa, Naspers - who are the owners of Multichoice/DStv platform - has announced the appointment of a new head for its Showmax and DStv Now streaming platforms.
Mr Niclas Ekdahl, the former chief at Ericsson's NuVu has agreed to join the Naspers family from September 2018 and, it is believed, has been given the remit to turn the tide around in favour of the African pay-TV behemoth.
Mr Ekdahl comes with a string of industry and market experience having led the NuVu streaming platform, and also worked at MTG and Viaplay
Commenting on the appointment, Mr Imtiaz Patel, CEO of Naspers Video Entertainment business, acknowledged the unprecedented growth of OTT TV and Video streaming services in Africa and, and wants his company to face, squarely, the dynamics of the industry, and to bring the best possible entertainment to consumers across a multi-various platform.
On his part, Mr Ekdahl says that he his delighted to be given the 'sacred' responsibility for building and developing OTT TV and new streaming services across Africa, a region he knows well.
