Nigeria: Erring Broadcasters To Pay $13.6K Fine For Hate speech – NBC

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a warning that the airing of hate speech by Nigeria’s media houses would now attract a fine of $13 600.00.

The Zonal coordinator of the NBC who is in charge of Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina and Kano states, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Kumo, made this announcement when he paid an advocacy visit to the relevant Managing Directors of the Jigawa broadcasting House in Dutse.

He said that broadcasting hate speech under the provision of the commission code would attract a minimum fine of $13 600.00.

He added that the violation of code by broadcast media houses in the running of their programmes would also attract a minimum fine of $683.00.

In his speech, Kumo also stressed the dire need for closer understanding between the National Broadcasting Commission and the electronic media in order to ensure sanity and harmony within the Broadcasting industry.

The Managing Directors of Jigawa Radio and Television assured Kumo that they would maintain the mutual understanding that currently exists between the stations and the state’s NBC Office.
