Digital Migration

Burundi Migrates From Analog To Digital Television

On 19th December 2016, during his speech at the opening ceremony of Digital TV broadcasting at the Burundi National Television, Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza said Burundi is resolute to achieve the international obligations of the 2006 Geneva Agreement which she signed. He says with this achievement the country will gradually migrate from analog to digital TV broadcasting.

He apologised on behalf of Burundi government for failing to meet its obligations on time as Burundi adopted digital broadcasting on 17 June 2015.

Nestor Bankumukunzi, the Minister in charge of communication, information and media technologies, said that although Burundi had backed the convention of the implementation of digital television in 2006, there was no action toward this motion until 2010.

He said the delay was due to the set-up of key commissions to support the ground-work for the migration as well as the legal and statutory context that had to be newly created. Funding was also a factor that contributed to the delay.
