Nigeria: Are DStv And StartTimes Broadcast Licenses About To Be Cancelled?

The Federal government in Nigeria may, via the National Broadcasting Commission -  Nigeria's regulatory authority for the broadcasting industry - have already read the riot act to both Multichoice Nigeria and StarTimes concerning their license to operate in the country.

According to reports attributed to the National Broadcasting Commission of Nigeria (NBC), the government believes that the way the licenses for DSTV/GOtv and Startimes are currently employed is not in line with the new digital switchover plans, as detailed in the country's DSO whitepaper.

According to the NBC, DSTV and Startimes will not be allowed to carry TV signals in the digital ecosystem, and as such, unless they agree to new terms, they might not be able to operate in Nigeria.

Mallam Modibo Ishaq Kawu, the Director General of NBC, is, therefore, urging both organisations to commence dialogue with the two licensed signal distributors - Pinnacle Communications and ITS - so as to come to a working arrangement for the good of the industry in Nigeria.
