Multichoice Puts Out Request For Bids For A 24-Hour CNN-Style News Channel

Multichoice South Africa is said to be announcing a request for bidders to launch a 24-hour news channel on the DStv platform.

According to a report from South Africa's Techcentral, Multichoice is keen to see how many bids it receives, and on that basis adjudge the level of interest that there is in the project.

Multichoice said it plans to have, on its platform, a predominantly black-owned news channel, broadcasting in English and portraying the socio-cultural and economic environment of modern-day South Africa.

The channel will need to focus, in the main, on African news, and the organisational set-up must have a robust community orientation. It goes without saying that the channel has to be "independent, unbiased and non-partisan".

According to the said report, it is expected that the bid winner will receive funding from Multichoice and "other sources".
