AfDB And The EU To Finance Central Africa National Fiber Backbone

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has confirmed its commitment to assisting the Central African Republic to achieve its digital potential. To this end, the Bank is partnering with the European Union to finance the building and deployment of the country's national fibre backbone.

The announced financing is comprised of a 16.7 million Euros 'grant' from the AfDB, matched with a 16.6 million Euros grant from the EU. The projected total cost for the project is put at 33.3 million Euros.

As part of the Central Africa Backbone project, this infrastructure intervention is expected to help the Central African Republic "realise the benefits of digitisation and help end the digital isolation of the country" according to Mr Ousmane Doré - the chief executive of Central Africa for AfDB.

The AfDB reiterated that this infrastructure support is in-line with its stated five strategic priorities.
