Ethiopia Is Ready For Massive Shake-up Of Broadcasting Industry

This year alone has seen four private satellite channels introduced to Ethiopia. One such private station is Kana TV which is currently offering light entertainment programmes but has news and current affairs programmes in the pipeline.

Also, the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority (EBA) has revealed it will be granting licences to three additional privately owned satellite channels. And some terrestrial satellite providers early next year.

According to Zeray Asgedom of Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority (EBA),  the Authority will be adjusting its policies to encourage more private TV media operators to commence operation in the country.

However, Iginio Gagliardone of Oxford University pointed out that the private media will find it challenging to produce alternative news because the state-owned station Ethiopia Broadcast Corporation (EBC) has an almost exclusive access to government information and ministers.
