Scrap TV Licenses Altogether In South Africa, Says Consumer Union

In South Africa, the South African National Consumer Union (SANCU) has objected to the proposed extension of TV licence fees to people's PCs, smartphones and tablets.

According to reports by the website My Broadband, SANCU is also asking the authorities to scrap the entire TV licensing regime. Ms Ina Wolken, SANCU spokesperson, reiterated that the South African TV Licence framework has been patently unfair to the poor who cannot afford to pay for it.

Recall that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) leadership has been lobbying to change the broadcasting law that allows it (the SABC) to charge TV licence fees on all devices including PCs, smartphones and tablets.
