South Africa: Digital TV Set-Top Box Makers To Take Govt. Agency To Court

A few digital TV set-top boxes manufacturers in South Africa are resorting to taking legal action against the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA).

The contracted set-top box manufacturers, it is understood, are seeking redress for their continuing financial losses due to the halt (until further notice) in the agreed production of set-top boxes for the country's digital migration as directed by USAASA.

USAASA's directive was, in turn, the result of a ruling by South Africa's highest court, which had declared that the set-top boxes must have encryption capabilities if they were to be 'legal' in South Africa.
