Netflix Still Refuses To Pay South Africa For Online Video Distribution - Claims Extortion

South Africa's Film and Publication Board (FPB) says it is owed more than 1.6 million South African Rands (USD 125,000) in licensing fees by Netflix, the global Video-On-Demand and streaming behemoth. These sums were allegedly accumulated by Netflix over the past two years.

According to the FPB, Netflix is obliged to pay the fees as per regulations guiding the distribution of online video content in South Africa. The fees supposedly grant Netflix a licence to show its catalogue with the country’s jurisdiction.

Netflix has claimed in the past that it is not doing anything wrong and that the fees amount to extortion! It is unclear if other VOD and online streaming providers in South Africa like home-grown Showmax are all paid-up.
