Telkom Kenya Subscribers Drop By 0.6 Million In 3 Months
Telkom Kenya’s subscriber numbers dropped by 676,389 or 16 percent in the three months that ended in September 2019, making it the only telco in Kenya to register a reduced customer base in that quarter.
Data compiled by the Communications Authority (CA) shows that the company’s mobile subscriptions dropped from 4.2 million to 3.5 million during the review period.
The poor performance comes just as the company moves closer to completing its merger with rival Airtel Kenya, having been granted the regulatory approvals to finalise the deal.
Safaricom, on the other hand, grew its mobile subscriptions by 4.4 percent to 34.5 million and was followed by Airtel, whose customer base spiked by 2.2 percent to 13.1 million.
Telkom and Airtel see their merger as a higher chance of competing against Safaricom.
Operating as one entity, Telkom and Airtel will match Safaricom’s capacity on most of the spectrum bands.
Airtel said that its strategy of cutting prices is helping it acquire more new customers.
Airtel is 68.31 percent owned by India’s Bharti Airtel. Telkom announced earlier that its real estate portfolio and government services would not form part of the combined entity.
