Nigeria: Telcos Add 10 Million Phone Lines In 11 Months – Communications Commission

Nigeria’s telecoms operators activated 10 million lines between January and November in 2019, according to the latest statistics that have been released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The new lines brought the total number of active mobile subscriptions across the Airtel, MTN, 9mobile and Globacom and 9mobile networks up to 182.4 million from the 172.4 million that had been recorded at the end of 2018.

Analysis of the industry data shows that Globacom gained the most new subscriptions for the period of the report.

According to NCC, the telecoms operator added approximately 5.8 million subscriptions in the period, increasing its active subscriber base total to 51.1 million.

Airtel gained 5.4 million new subscriptions during the period, which catapulted its subscriptions to roughly 49.6 million.

MTN held on to its number one spot as the most extensive network in terms of its subscriber base with no less than 67.3 million subscriptions, and also activated 215,849 new phone lines within that period.

However, while the other telcos gained new subscriptions, 9mobile recorded a decrease of 1.7 million in its subscriptions, which brought its customer base to a disappointing 14.1 million from the 15.9 million it had registered at the end of 2018.

Judging by Nigeria’s estimated population of approximately190 million, the reported 182.4 million active subscriptions would mean that almost everyone in Nigeria now has a mobile line. Based on this finding, the NCC also put Nigeria’s teledensity at 95.71 percent.
